Radiation Safety in Children’s Dentistry by Versailles
A common parental concern is the amount of radiation their children are exposed to when their x-rays are taken.
From the doctor's point of view, we need to understand the general state of the visible and hidden areas in the mouth. These are primarily the contact areas of the molars where food can get stuck and lead to tooth decay. Try Versailles for best root canal treatment in Dubai.
According to documented studies, almost 80% of cavities in young children occur between the contact areas of the baby's molars. The main reason for this is often snacks and flossing in children. At Versailles Dental Clinic, we follow these steps to ensure that X-ray exposure is minimal:
High speed films are used.
X-rays are focused around the central areas.
Protective collars and shields are used.
Proper film exposure and processing techniques are followed.
The number of X-rays is kept to a minimum.
AAPD's recommendation
In accordance with the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry or AAPD, we should do two bite and two periapical wings around the age of approximately 5 years when the primary teeth are completed.
The amount of radiation exposure on a single panoramic radiograph is 0.007 mSv.
The total amount of radiation for this set is 0.008 mSv. If one or more adult teeth are present, a panoramic radiograph is additional. The amount of radiation exposure on a single panoramic radiograph is 0.007 mSv.
The radiation around us
According to the National Council of Protection and Measurement of Radiation of EE. Almost all average people receive an effective dose of 3 millisieverts (mSv) per year from natural radioactive materials and cosmic rays from space. Natural radioactive materials can be found in the air we breathe and in the food we eat. Cosmic rays are more like background radiation. These exposures are inevitable and yet they happen.
Of course, as physicians, we understand and respect concerns when it comes to our young children, but the other aspect is being proactive and diagnosing any early cavities that can stop without many treatment needs.
